Barriers Are There To Be Broken

How Honor achieved her goals despite the barriers she faced in life

“It was the best decision I have ever made with my child’s education.” - Mum

Honor has faced a lot of barriers in her life.  Due to long-term illness, she had missed big chunks of school over the years.  Keeping up with her education became increasingly difficult each time she was unwell.

High predicted grades exacerbated Honor’s belief that she had missed too much to ever be able to catch up.  The anxiety of expectations was becoming unmanageable.

“Before I worked with Sarah I struggled with confidence. I needed help with my ability to believe I was able to improve and trust in my own abilities.” - Honor

Self-doubt was stropping her achieving.  Having a space to just ‘be’ and talk about whatever she needed in that moment was key to her success.  Creating a safe space for Honor to work through her week, the ups, downs and everything in between.  We build a relationship based on mutual respect, understanding and compassion.  Honor wasn’t just another Maths student.  She has hobbies and passions.  There is so much more to her than just her schoolwork and we had a genuine interest in each other’s lives… “we bonded over a love of dance and musical theatre”.

Being faced with one challenge after another, it felt relentless.  Honor needed someone to remind her how amazing she is and not allow her to give up.  “Within one session I left looking forward to the improvements I could make in the future”.  We used this new-found confidence in Maths to break down the barriers Honor had built to protect herself.

“Through my tutoring sessions with Sarah I was able to implement a positive mental attitude in all of my subjects, allowing me to enjoy my school experience much more!” - Honor

Honor worked incredibly hard to fill the gaps of knowledge she had due to her ongoing illness.  She found an inner strength to push herself to achieve, while also learning to trust her body when it needed to rest.  Honor had convinced herself that “the idea of me being able to even complete my GCSE’s seemed far-fetched”.  In fact, she left secondary school having passed all ten of her GCSE’s.

“Working with Sarah has opened so many doors for me”… Honor is now at Exeter College doing Performing and Production Arts (Musical Theatre).

“Sarah isn’t just a kinda cool Maths teacher, she will be your friend, mentor and motivator.” - Honor
