Discover Your Strengths
There are so many different parts of Maths, no-one can be expected to grasp them all confidently. But there will be aspects that each individual finds easier. The trick is to discover those and tailor learning to play to those strengths.
Maths is about understanding concepts, breaking down problems and finding solutions.
It is not about a process and an answer. So often we struggle with Maths because we are trying to remember how to do something, rather than unpicking why we do something.
One-to-one sessions are about working through things we find easier to discover where the strengths lie. Once we have this, everything becomes easier. If diagrams and visual aids help, then we incorporate those across many different topics. If algebra just makes sense, then we approach topics algebraically. There will always be something that works, it is just about finding what that something is for each individual.
There is no right age to learn any parts of Maths. Struggles often arise because there is a belief that we ‘should’ know things at a particular times in our lives.
Every single person will have strengths in Maths. As we start to believe this, our confidence grows. As our confidence grows, we find more strengths. Then we find ourselves in a wonderful upward spiral.
Be The Best You Can Be
Each of our goals are different. From aspiring to a particular GCSE grade, to feeling more confident in lessons, to sharing a love of Maths… every session takes us one step closer to those goals. Equally, there may not be a specific goal, and sessions can be led by what’s needed in the moment.
All of those options, and any others, are okay. We work together to improve, with no expectation beyond what is right for each individual.
Confidence Is Key
Confidence in Maths starts with feeling safe to ask all the weird and wonderful questions.
Being ‘better’ at Maths is not about learning more it is about understanding what you already know. It is about applying that knowledge across different abilities.
Achieving, in the traditional sense of the word, will come when you feel more confident in your abilities.
